If public libraries hold a special place in your heart, please consider signing on to serve your community as a board member here at Holland Free Public Library. We currently have 3 vacancies for a 1 year term lasting from April 2021 - April 2022.
What is the time commitment required ?
Board members meet on the 2nd Tuesday of every month (via Zoom in the current climate) for 1 hour to 90 minutes. Depending on their chosen role, Board members may take on a project that is active only during certain weeks of the year, or they might help out a couple of hours a month year-round.
What would I do as a new board member ?
FUNDRAISING:
We are currently seeking a board member to spearhead Fundraising efforts in service of the library. You don't need to have specialized experience on your resume, or even a long list of ideas. We are hoping to find someone with a knack for prioritizing manageable ideas; someone who is comfortable taking the lead on a project, and good at running down a checklist to see that details are in order.
In the past we have organized an annual wine tasting event, 50/50 raffle, bingo games, or a trivia night. This year we are organizing a coin toss to coincide with "Shred Day" at the recycling center, packaging gift bags in celebration of Mother's Day and Father's Day, and taking orders for Christmas-time poinsettias.
SECRETARY-IN-TRAINING:
Would you like to take the minutes at our monthly meetings? The Secretary takes notes while the meeting is in-progress and types up a formal account of the motions passed and decisions made. This board member prepares the minutes and emails them to their fellow Trustees in a timely fashion. Elections are coming right up, so we don't expect to formally pass on this role right away. If you would like to join the board, learn "Robert's Rules of Order", and take some time to get the hang of it, we would love to show you the ropes!
BEHIND-THE-SCENES:
We are hoping to find a board member who is willing to help out with a little of everything behind-the-scenes. Formally, your role would be listed as an "Alternate", in practice that might mean stuffing envelopes during membership season, holding a bucket at the coin toss, labeling boxes at the annual book sale, spreading news of our programs to communities who might not see our announcements on Facebook, or chiming in on an email thread as we problem-solve an issue that crops up.
